Did you know?
Registering a domain is just the first step in putting a site on the web. If you want to put a website at a domain, you need web hosting. Essentially, every website needs a computer behind it, pushing out the text, graphics, audio, video, and other web goodies to every computer than connects to it. In the language of the Internet, these computers are dedicated machines called servers. As the name implies, their job is to serve websites, and they do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Instead of maintaining your own server, a web host lets you use space on its servers for a monthly or yearly hosting fee.

How We Reviewed These Web Hosts
Our in-house reviewers have signed up for and used every service you see here. In developing the ratings they looked for services that provide quality web hosting at inexpensive prices. Our reviewers tested Wordpress installations, shopping cart programs, and site builders. They also contacted technical support at each web host to determine the quality of customer service. Finally, they tested the bandwidth and reliability of each host using an in-house download test and reliability data from Pingdom.com. You can see the test results on our web hosting report card.
How to Create a Website
After you’ve set up your web hosting account, you can decide how you want to build a website. Most web hosts offer you a way to build a site right in your web browser. There are also site-building programs from companies like Adobe, Apple, and Microsoft (as well as free options) that provide greater flexibility. If you want an easier start, try creating a blog. Most web hosts allow you to do this in just a few clicks, and you can incorporate it into a more full-featured site later, when you’re ready.
